This first phase of the redevelopment of the Ealing site at Ealing Hammersmith and West London College included the reinstatement of the fire damaged upper floor of the original Ealing School, built in 1913, but including a new column free floor in the roof space to accommodate a new Learning Resource Centre.
The reinstatement included protection of the remaining building, demolition, repairs to fire damaged reinforced concrete slabs and repairs to brickwork and stonework. A new steel frame was introduced into the roof void to form the LRC whilst keeping the roof profile identical to the original profile. The whole of the building was refurbished and redecorated. The site, whilst not in a conservation area, is located next door to the Grade I listed Pitshanger Manor Museum and was therefore subject to close scrutiny by both the local planners and English Heritage.
